The Castle Valley Athletic Association teams have began their wrestling seasons as Helper Junior High defeated Mont Harmon Junior High by a score of 53-35 on Thursday afternoon.

HJH wrestling coach Phil Howa said Mont Harmon was able to build a large lead of 32-4 in the early matches between the rival schools.

The meet saw wrestlers participate in weight classes of anywhere from 75 lbs to the heavyweights.

"It was a good victory for us," Howa said. "We won some matches we didn't think we could and we lost some we thought we could win."

For both teams the first meet offered a chance for students new to wrestling a chance to get out on the mat for the first time to test out their skills.

Helper is the defending region champions after winning the league last year.

Wrestling can be a difficult sport for many youth to pick up as it requires hard work and plenty of dedication to succeed.

"The kids new to wrestling need to learn the system because they have never wrestled before," Howa said.
