Five hundred balloons rise into the sky Wednesday as Sally Mauro Elementary students hold a ceremony to observe Red Ribbon Week. Each balloon carries a hand-written pledge to avoid drug and alcohol abuse. The children have been taking part in the DARE program, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Local police officers take part in school classes that teach students methods of building self-esteem and avoiding drug use.
