Carbon High volleyball team ready for state tournament
In state tournament play, one game can change everything. For the Carbon High Lady Dinos volleyball team, it presents an opportunity to shake things up and make some noise throughout the class 3A.
The Lady Dinos, 11-15 overall and 5-4 in Region 12 play, qualified for the state tournament after finishing in third place in their region.
While Carbon is accustomed to qualifying for the state tournament on a yearly basis, this year they find themselves in a new position: underdogs.
Head coach Bob Potts said previously that the team would need to embrace being the underdogs while finishing up the rest of season play.
"We've spent the last seven to eight years in first in our region," Potts said noting the underdog role will be a change from years past.
The team, led by four seniors including middle hitter Amanda Freestone, outside hitters Rachel Scoggins and Darian Latimer and outside hitter/setter Shaylie Jones, will need to be at their best from the start as they open tournament play today against Morgan, the number one team from Region 11 at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University at 4:30 p.m.
Carbon is guaranteed to play at least two games, or more depending on how far they advance in the double elimination tournament. Should they defeat Morgan in the first round, Carbon would then play the winner of Dixie/Union later today at 7:45 p.m.. If they lose against Morgan, Carbon would play the loser of Dixie/Union later today at 7:45 p.m.
