Carbon County has been reunited into a single entity in the Utah House of Representives. As a result of redistricting, the whole county will have a single representative.

District 69, now represented by Christine Watkins (D), currently covers the eastern part of the county. But parts of the county on the west side, including Helper, Carbonville, Kenilworth and Spring Glen are represented in District 67 by Patrick Painter (R) of Nephi for the past decade. The new legislative map takes away Watkins' previous territory in San Juan County, but adds territory to the north, mainly the cities of Duchesne and Roosevelt. And, as she explained Friday, she'll have to brush up on Ute culture now that she'll no longer be representing the Navajo.

She sponsored legislation to honor the Navajo code talkers of World War II in the last session.

"I'm sad to lose San Juan County, but the rural representatives wanted to maintain rural seats, and this was the way to do it," she said.

On the other hand, she said she's looking forward to making new acquaintances in Duchesne County.

As far as representing a unified Carbon County, "I felt complimented. When I saw the final map, I said, 'Wow, that's great,'" she declared.
