The Carbon High wrestling team traveled to Vernal last week to compete in the Uintah tournament of champions. The tourney attracted 50 teams and Carbon fared quite well against the competition.
The Dinos started the tourney quite strong. By the end of the first day of competition, the Carbon squad found themselves in fifth place.
The following day however, the Dinos would struggle and eventually end the meet in 17th place overall with a final score of 75. Not a bad finish in any means however, it was a little lower than the team had hoped for.
"It was a big finish for us, but I think some of the kids were disappointed with the placement. After all, the end of the first day found us in the top five. We have a good team and should only get better," explained Carbon wrestling coach Dave Smith.
Three of the Dino athletes placed individually in the event. Trent Greenhalgh lead the team with a third place finish in the 103 pound division. Greenhalgh captured this victory after defeating Ogden wrestler Angelo Gallegos in the final round of competition.
Carbon senior, Jan Jorgensen finished in fifth place in the 215 pound division. Jorgensen's fifth place victory came after a forfeit by Maine Ardrey of Cherry Creek, Colo.
Finally, Zach Burdick finished in eighth place in his respected weight division.
The Carbon wrestlers returned to the mat Wednesday evening as the team hosted Region 8 opponent, Delta.
