Price City fire engine has tough time fitting in, needs new structure

A new fire engine for Price City is bringing about questions on where exactly the city will be able to park it when it's not in use.

The current fire station is already filled to its limit, according to Price Fire Chief Paul Bedont, which has the city looking at putting up a structure directly across the street.

The Price City Council voted at its previous meeting in favor of allowing the fire department to have a steel structure erected in the lot.

The new fire truck, a aerial ladder truck with a ladder capable of reaching 110 feet, was purchased with the help of a $750,000 grant that was awarded to Price City from FEMA, according to Bedont.

However the soon-to-be-built structure has not come without its detractors. Roy Hofer, the owner of the building which houses Sudsy Duds and other businesses next to the spot planned for the new building, brought up concerns about parking for the employees who work at the businesses and the customers who need a place to park and safety concerns with the truck coming in and out of the new building.

Council members came up with possibilities including moving city vehicles parked in the area to the lot near the fire station.

Bedont said the new engine wouldn't be used as much do the other smaller engines for calls that come in each day.

"There's never a good place to put a building like this," Bedont said. "We have to make do with what we can right now."

The structure should be in place before the winter season arrives.
