For the third straight year, Stan the Drum Man (Stan Secrest of New York) spent a week with Cathy Wilson's art students at Helper Junior High School teaching them the fine art of drum making. To celebrate the accomplishment (top left), the school assembled a 180-member drum circle, almost the entire student body. Wilson is conducting them in basic rhythms such as "Hel-per-Ju-nior High School. (Top right) Secrest tells the assembled students that it has been his pleasure to once again visit the school. (Bottom) Even a non-student gets to play in the circle. The bass drum is far bigger than this youngster is.
Principal Tom Montoya told the audience that Helper may have the highest per capita concentration of drums in the nation. Who's to argue with that?
