Carbon High volleyball coach Bob Potts has constantly told his team during practices and games to finish strong. After a slow start to the 2011 season, the Lady Dinos seem to be doing just that.

The Lady Dinos have begun to string together wins heading into the final stretch of the season. After losing their first five games, the Lady Dinos have won 4 of their last 6 games. That current streak includes their most recent game, a three set sweep of region opponent Juab (25-23, 25-22, 25-18) last Thursday.

Down by four in the second set, Carbon began to make a comeback as senior outside hitter Sadey Daugherty served an ace and senior middle hitter Amanda Freestone scored a kill that tied the game at 16-16. Carbon took the lead and never relinquished it as senior outside hitter Darian Latimer added another ace to extend the lead to 23-20. Two service errors by Juab players gave the second set to Carbon, 25-22.

In the third set the Lady Dinos built a five point lead at 7-2 and continued to build off of it throughout the set. Junior outside hitter Ashley Quinton pushed the lead to 11-4 after serving two aces. Quinton and Freestone later added back-to-back blocks on consecutive plays to extend the lead to 17-9.

But while the Lady Dinos enjoyed a large in the third set, Juab began chipping away at the lead on service and serve receive errors by the Lady Dinos. The Wasps were able to get the score down to 24-18 before another service error by a Wasp player ended the game.

While he was pleased with another region win, Potts said the team needs to become more consistent in finishing off opponents. He noted that in the final set 10 of Juab's 18 points came off of errors made by Carbon players.

"We're still letting teams score on us at the end," Potts said after the game. "Those [points] were a gift from us."

Despite some struggles during the game, Potts credited the leadership of his seniors for helping guide the team to another victory.

"We had a great start in every set and Amanda [Freestone] and Rachel [Scoggins] played great for us," he said.

Freestone led the Lady Dinos with 14 kills and Scoggins added 11 kills on 17 attempts.

After defeating Juab on Thursday, the Carbon headed up to Salt Lake City for tournament play. On Friday, Carbon played in three games against fellow 3A teams Stansbury, Park City and 4A Sky View. Carbon lost to both Stansbury (25-23, 25-23) and Sky View (25-15, 25-10) before picking up a win via forfeit against Park City.

Starting on Saturday, Carbon competed in the Utah Classic Tournament. They faced 4A Bountiful and 5A Brighton. Carbon lost both games, losing to Bountiful (28-16, 25-12) and Brighton (25-13, 25-18).

The Lady Dinos will continue region play with a game tonight against Payson at 6:30 p.m at the Carbon High gym.
