Dinos lose third straight region game
After playing tough defense through the game's first two quarters and scoring two quick touchdowns right before halftime, a big win looked to be in the cards for the Carbon Dinos Friday night. However, as the Payson offense found their rhythm in the third quarter, the Dinos couldn't find an answer on either side of the ball, eventually succumbing to the Lion's pin point passing 23-14.
While the Dinos came out of the gate roaring this season, a tough region schedule has tamed the once 4-0 squad, who fell to 4-3 with this most recent loss.
After a defensive standoff for much of the game's first half, Carbon marched down the field late in the second quarter, as Daulton Nelson punched it in from four yards out, giving the Dinos their first lead of the night 6-3. Following a successful point after attempt by Tanner Gagnon, the Dinos were quick to add to their lead via a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jamison Oviatt with only seconds remaining in the half.
Defense has been key for the Dinos all season, seeming to only strengthen as each game wore on, on Friday night however, Payson's Devan Judd connected for two touchdowns with Clint Bateman as the Lions reeled off 20 unanswered points to close out Carbon 23-14.
Carbon will now look to post their first region victory of the season at home vs Juab next week. Make sure to check out Tuesday's edition of the Sun Advocate for coach and player reactions to the game as well as a preview of the next week's homecoming contest.
