Leonard scores points with big elk
JD Leonard, Kyle Leonard and Zachery Rodriguez show of JD's prize Elk behind Miner's Trading Post in Sunnyside. Leonard was able to take the bull near Cold Spring on Sept. 22, after a full season of scouting and hunting.
Leonard is a life-long East Carbon resident and employee at Joy Mining Machinery, he is also a hunting enthusiast who enjoys taxidermy. According to Leonard's Facebook account of the hunt, he "found the bull in July with Kyle Leonard and Cory McCubbin, watched him in August with Kyle Leonard and took him in September with Kyle Leonard and Zach Rodriguez."
Leonard took the bull with his Ruger 30-06 from 50 yards on Sept. 21, tracked the elk into the next day and located the bull approximately 100 yards from the area of his first shot.
"It was nerve racking to shoot an elk of that size, I have always hunted deer but this was my first elk so I was pretty nervous, explained Leonard. "Being part of the Brown Gold Outfitters Team, which just started up in Price, gave me a lot of confidence. It was a big bonus to be out there with other experienced hunters."
Leonard's 6x6 point Elk scored 340 points.
