Carbon High golf finishes season; golfer Etzel heads to state tourney
While the Carbon High golf teams have completed their seasons, much improvement was made and one golfer was on his way to the state tournament.
The Carbon High JV golf team traveled to Delta in late September to compete against the other JV teams in the region. Head coach Tom King said the team performed really well taking second place behind Spanish Fork.
The team was lead by Dakota Andrews who shot an 81. Derek Weston, Dallas Anselmo, Cody Riley, Derek Weston, Blake Bean, Bryce Blackburn and Dillen Ward were the other kids who participated in this event. We shot a team total of 341 which was 20 shots better then the last time we traveled to Delta. The course played a little easier as the wind did not blow this time but our kids are getting better too. Dillen Ward played a whole lot better then the last time he was there as well as Derek Weston played better too.
"It shows that we have light at the end of the tunnel as our young kids will improve as they play more."
The team then traveled to Vernal for the fourth annual non-region event that is known as the Eastern Utah Cup. The Dino golfers competed against teams including Union and the varsity and JV teams from Uintah. King said the team finished third, just four shots back of Union. The Dinos shot a total of 339.
Uintah proved they are a powerhouse and shot a team total of 296 with their lowest score coming from Christen Karen, who shot a 69. Karen was also the Eastern Utah champion at the Carbon Country Club at a recent event.
The kids started showing improvement as 339 would be great scores to have during region play. Robbie Etzel lead the team with a score of 83, Derek Wilson and Kody Henrie both shot 85, Dakota Andrews and Nick Rukavina shot 86, Freston Smith shot an 87, Derek Young shot 90, Bryce Blackburn shot 98 and Blake Bean finished with 102.
The team finished up their season with those events. However one player, Robbie Etzel, was able to advance to the state tournment held this week at Fox Hallow on Oct. 5 and 6.
Results from Robbie Etzel's performance at the state tournament will be printed as soon as they become available.
