Lady Dinos finding their winning ways
After starting the 2011 season without a win in their first five games, the Carbon High Dinos Volleyball team is starting to find their winning groove as the season progresses.
The Lady Dinos picked up their third straight victory on the season with a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23) over Spanish Fork on Tuesday night.
Carbon looked to be in position to take the first set with a good lead but Spanish Fork set off a scoring barrage to take the set, according to Carbon coach Bob Potts.
"We had a lead in the first set but Spanish Fork came all the way back to take the first set," said Potts.
Despite the disappointing start to the game, Potts said the team started playing better as the game went along.
In the final three sets, Carbon was able to get a lead on the Lady Dons. But in each set they needed to hold off Spanish Fork from making a comeback.
Senior Amanda Freestone led the Dinos with 19 kills. Senior Rachel Scoggins added 8 kills and junior Kayleigh Potts had 5.
Senior Shaylie Jones finished with 30 assists. Four Carbon players finished with at least ten digs including junior Jennee Martinez (14), junior Sadey Daughterty (12), senior Darian Latimer (11) and Jones with (11).
Potts said is not concerned with the team's slow start to the season, citing the many tournaments teams play in before regular season play.
"We have good offensive talent to put points on the board," he said. "If our defense continues to improve, it will enhance our offense and help win games."
Carbon will continue region play as they take on Delta tonight at 6 p.m. at the Carbon High Gym.
