Two Sandy women were killed and three other persons seriously injured early Friday afternoon in a chain-reaction collision on US 6 near the mouth of Cat Canyon about 10 miles southeast of Price.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Darin Scott Hawkinson, 47, East Carbon, was headed west when it drifted off to the right side of the road, then over corrected and crossed the center line directly into the path of an eastbound 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe carrying driver Steven Dee Hulse, 64, Sandy, and three passengers.

The Santa Fe struck Hawkinson's vehicle broadside, ripping it completely in half. The impact then sent the Santa Fe into a collision with a Peterbilt tractor trailer, also eastbound.

Killed in the crash were the two women in the Santa Fe, 64-year-old Sharlene Atkinson and 63-year-old Lynnette C. Hulse. Steven Hulse was critically injured and William G. Atkinson Jr., 65, suffered serious injuries. All four of the victims in the Santa Fe had been wearing seatbelts, according to the UHP.

Hawkinson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was critically injured.

The injured victims were transported by ambulance to Castleview Hospital.

The driver of the semi, James M. Melvin, 53, Price, was seat-belted and was not injured.

Wreckage from the collisions was scattered across the highway, forcing the closure of the traffic artery in both directions for more than an hour, as rescuers treated the injured and investigators documented the scene. Traffic was backed up for more than a mile in each direction.
