Making a break for freedom

A chukar partridge heads for the hills of Pinnacle Canyon near Price Thursday as Division of Wildlife Resources biologist Brad Crompton tries to convnce its crate mates that freedom is only inches away. DWR released about 200 birds, 50 each at Pinnacle Canyon, Farnum near Wellington, the area around Millsite State Park and south of Cedar Mountain.

The birds' freedom may be short-lived. On Saturday, DWR had scheduled a youth hunt for game hunters 15 years and younger. Open season on the game birds begins this Saturday.

Chukars are natives of Central Asia, where terrain and climate are similar to Castle Couintry and other regions of Utah. According to DWR, the birds are becoming increasingly popular for hunters and populations are increasing.
