Two young adults and two children were injured Wednesday evening when the SUV they were riding in plunged off a cliff north of Price.

One of the children, whose names were not released, had back injuries severe enough to be LifeFlighted, according to Deputy Tory Christiansen.

The adults were Thad Gurule and Vanessa Hafen, both 18 and from Carbon County. They were slightly injured.

Christiansen said all four victims were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled about 70 feet down the cliff.

The accident happened at about 7 p.m. The deputy said the vehicle was heading east on Avalanche Road north of the baseball fields when it apparently drifted off to the left side of the road. Then the driver overcorrected, sending the car off the right side of the road and down the cliff.

Hafen apparently had to climb up the hillside to get cell phone reception and called 911.

This area is criss-crossed with dirt/gravel service roads,so it was difficult for the caller to give a specific location. It took emergency responders a while to locate the wreck and victims, Christiansen said.

However, a caravan of emergency services arrived, including Carbon County ambulances, Price police and rescue, the Carbon County Sheriff's Department and Utah Highway Patrol.

Gurule, the driver, was cited for failure to maintain control of a vehicle on a mountain or canyon road.
