Mission accomplished for Carbon High boys golf
The Carbon High boys golf team traveled to Gladstan Golf Course in Payson on Thursday, Aug. 25 for its fourth region match of the season. They were in sixth place in the region. Carbon set a goal of not falling any further behind at this match.
The Dinos were able to accomplish that goal with a fourth place finish, while picking up eight shots on Delta and North Sanpete. Spanish Fork took first with a team 318 followed by Payson at 338, Juab at 342, Carbon at 354 with Delta and North Sanpete bringing up the rear at 362.
Nick Rukavina, Blake Bean and Derek Weston all shot 88 on the par 72. Co-captain Robbi Etzel really struggled on the front nine with a 49, but was able to turn it around on the back with a 41 to shot 90. Dakota Andrews shot an 98 and Feston Smith shot a 101.
Coach Tom King explained, "We did not play all that great. Delta and North Sanpete had a hard time too and were eight shots worse than us. We had a good week of practice as we worked hard on our short game and it showed a little."
"As we looked back, we could account for 20 shots that we could have saved. Both Rukavina and Bean finished their last two holes double bogey, triple bogey. If they both made par on those holes we would have gained 10 shots Etzel really struggled with his composure and mental game on the front. I feel that that cost him at least ten shots as he was upset," added King. "What these kids need to remember is that the game of golf is sometimes more mental than physical. Weston struggled on some of his short putts as the greens were a little faster and there were some very tough hole locations out there."
"Needless to say, I am proud of them for gaining ground. We still to pick up strokes on both Delta and North Sanpete next week as we travel to North Sanpete's home course. If we can pick up a few more there and then come to our home course we could find a way to move into our fourth and a chance to make the state championship."
