It wasn't the start they were looking for, but Carbon High coach Bob Potts knew the opening night, preseason loss was about shaking off the nerves and identifying weakness more that anything. The Lady Dinos lost their opening match 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18 to the Richfield Wildcats on Tuesday night.

Set one was a back and forth game throughout most of the contest. Carbon faltered at the end and let Richfield take the set. The Lady Dinos seemed to regroup and game out in set two with energy and quickly jumped out in front of the Widcats. But again late in the contest Carbon seemed to lose focus and Richfield caught them at 17 each and then kept the lead the remaining time.

A disjointed Lady Dinos team took the court for the final set and found themselves in a huge hole. But down big, Carbon dug a little deeper and began to make it a game. They pulled within two, but fell short of a great come back in the final set.

Amanda Freestone had nine kills. Shaylie Jones dished 14 set assists and Sadey Daugherty finished with 18 defensive digs for the Lady Dinos.

Coach Bob Potts was focused on both the good and bad he saw from the first game and what they need to do to prepare for Emery.

"The girls came off the court a little stunned but ready to work on things to be ready for Emery and that is how we need to be," remarked Potts right after the game. "Our serving was really good and our blocking did well especially against Richfield's tall line. But our passing was off and we seemed off a half a step on defense all night. We aren't that way in practice so I think it was a case of nerves and it showed. We moved players around all night to adjust and it did pay off. We have that luxury because we have the depth to do it."

The team will head to Castle Dale on Thursday for another preseason match. They will have a break before taking on North Sanpete at home for the opening of region play on Sept. 15 with game time at 6:30 p.m.
