Building on the momentum the team felt like they had from the second half of the game against Granger on Monday, the Carbon High girls soccer team followed up with a 1-0 win over Grantsville on Thursday. It was the first win of the season for the Lady Dinos.

A great week of practice and the addition of foreign exchange student Martine Riadstad was just what the doctor ordered for a struggling soccer team. Carbon came out with confidence and dominated the game from the beginning. The Cowgirls were not able to control the ball as the Lady Dinos played with a more aggressive style than they have all season.

Despite having many shots on goal, it was deep in the first half before Carbon finally found the net.

The shot was made by Riadstad. She is an exchange student from Norway and had only one practice with the varsity before the Thursday contest. She brings much needed experience to a team beginning to gel.

Neither teams were able to score in the final half, but Carbon continued to control play for most of the game.

With less than four minutes to play there was a lightning delay that lasted about a half hour. Palmer used the time to rest his team and talk strategy.

Sierra Williams got her first shutout as a goalie but Coach Keith Palmer also credits the defense as a whole for the shut out effort.

"It was like an extra half time in the game," he remarked.

Palmer was most happy with the team defense he observed.

"This past week something has just clicked. We have a week to get ready for Delta and now we can work on the small things and not have to focus on basics like passing. What a difference two weeks make. I am excited about the remainder of the season right now."

Carbon heads to Delta this Thursday for their first region game and then have a break for a week before taking on Spanish Fork at home in another region contest.
