Helper Arts and Music Festival

You could buy a still-life in Helper last weekend, but you couldn't live one.

Not with crowds milling about on Main Street Friday through Sunday, shopping their way through the vendor tents looking for arts and crafts to buy.

Certainly not with bands playing in a near-continuous concert in the Main Street park and other musicians in the street.

This was the Helper Arts and Music Festival, which once again drew thousands of visitors to the small town.

This year's festival was headed by co-directors Stacey Armstrong and Kathleen Royster, with the full backing of the city and the county's arts community.

Artists and crafters from around the region set up shop under Main Street canopies, while other talented folk took part in the plein air (open air) painting competition, the sculpture slap, or hung their works in the Helper Salon for judging.

Performing artists were not to be outdone. In something of a tour-de-force stage performance, the same four actors put on a comedic adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps" at the Rio Theatre in the evenings, while they did a reading of Bianca Dumas' new drama, "Incompatible with Life," on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Dumas, a Carbon County native, again this year won first prize in the judging for best drama.

The celebration began with a performance by the BYU ballroom dancers in Civic Auditorium Thursday evening.

Live entertainment on the park stage was arranged by Jinni Fontana-Lund of the Helper Arts Council.
