Dinos roar to life, win 2011 opener
For the second year in a row the Carbon Dino's football team started the season against Monticello. And for the second year in a row, both teams played a close back and forth game that saw the Dinos prevail in their season opener 27-20.
After leading 13-12 at halftime Friday night, Carbon and Monticello played a scoreless third quarter. This set up a fourth that saw plenty of offensive fireworks from both teams. On a fourth down deep in their own territory, Monticello muffed a punt allowing Carbon to take over on downs inside the five-yard line. A few plays later, Daulton Nelson pushed in a 1-yard touchdown run and the ensuing extra point gave Carbon a 20-12 lead.
Monticello took the following kickoff and drove down the field deep into Dino territory. With time running out, Monticello engineered a big drive against the Carbon defense. The Buckaroos scored a late touchdown on a 4-yard run by Austin Wilcox closing the gap to 20-18. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, Monticello's Wilcox converted, tying the game at 20-20.
Looking to finish strong, the Dinos started their next drive at their own 20 yard line. Two plays later, the Dinos broke out a big play as Nick Haycock scored on an 81-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Dakota Cisneros to go up 27-20.
The Buckaroos could not convert on their following drive as the Carbon "D" stopped them on a fourth down with less than two minutes left. From there the Dino offense deployed the victory formation, as they ran out the clock to secure the victory.
Cisneros finished with three touchdown passes for the Dinos as he connected with Haycock on touchdown receptions of 4, 3 and 81 yards.
Carbon (1-0) will next play this coming Friday against American Leadership Academy at the Carbon High football field. Kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
