Young Carbon golf team finishes first match
The Carbon High boys golf team had their first match of the season. Carbon finished fifth out of six teams and shot 351. Spanish Fork finished first with 309, then Juab 337, North Sanpete 341, Payson 345, Carbon 351 and Delta 360.
"Well we have had our first match and like I said it will be a starting point for us to see how we fair in the region and how much work we have to do," said coach Tom King. "After the first match we need to do a lot of work. The good news is that we are not too far back after the first match and we can catch up to the other teams. I am very proud of Robbi Etzel."
Etzel shot an 80 in his first match and finished in the top ten. He played well as a sophomore especially in Carbon's number one position. Derek Weston was second for the Dinos with an 86. This was followed by Derek Young 92, Nick Rukavina 93, Dakota Andrews and Dillen Ward both shot 104.
Coach King went on to add, "We really missed Jaren McCourt as he was not able to attend the match due to a family trip. Unfortunately he has been in an accident and looks to be out the rest of the season. He will be missed."
King wrapped up the first week of competition, "We will have a good practice and I am looking for the kids that did not make the first trip to pick up their games and play better this week in qualifying so we will be able to take our strongest team."
Carbon will play at Delta on Wednesday and will be able to take six varsity and three JV players. They will then head to Fox Hollow on Thursday where they also will have six golfers.
"I am very confident in this team. I know if they play at their potential, we can finish second or third in this region," King added.
