Columbia subdivision residents and their homes escaped unscathed Sunday night as both East Carbon and Sunnyside firefighters put down a fast burning brush fire which erupted just 50 feet from residential property.

Local emergency personnel were paged out just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday night as residents of East Carbon's Columbia subdivision reported thick smoke and flames just east of the Columbia Park.

"Both departments responded very quickly and put the flames down fast," said East Carbon Fire Chief Darrell Valdez. "It was important to do so, as the flames were moving quickly east just 50 feet from residential property."

The tandem effort comes amid talks that the local departments may be considering a merger to assist with equipment funding efforts in the cities. East Carbon and Sunnyside operate with only one police department and one ambulance service between the two towns. The issue of merger may be discussed at this evening's East Carbon council meeting.

While no official cause has been linked to the Sunday evening fire, Chief Valdez was adamant about local children and their use of flammable materials.

"I would just like to remind parents that everything is so dry," concluded Valdez. "Please make sure to watch out for all matches, lighters and other flammable materials around the home. Make sure that these devices don't find their way into curious little hands."
