An 11-year-old East Carbon juvenile is safe tonight after a large group of local police officials, volunteers and Carbon County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue personnel spent the better part of Friday searching for the reported runaway.

According to family members on scene where the girl was found, the juvenile ran away just after 10 a.m. Friday morning and was reported missing sometime thereafter. Following a lengthy search through the rugged terrain which surrounds East Carbon and Sunnyside, the young girl was spotted among a steep rock outcropping at the mouth of Whitmore Canyon just before 8 p.m.

After police and rescue officials led the 11-year-old and her dog down through the rocks and into their vehicles, she as taken to the local public safety building to confer with area officials and her parents. While no official report has been made concerning the girl's health, she was able to climb down through the rocks on her own and appeared to be unharmed.
