Carbon Cal Ripken teams participating in tournament play experienced the ups and downs that baseball provides teams.

The 12-year-olds ventured down to Surprise, Ariz., for tournament action. In their first game of the tournament against the honetown team from Surprise on Monday, the team from Carbon powered their way to a win by a score of 12-6.

They advanced to play a team from Woodland, Calif., but ultimately fell in the end. Coach Shane Henrie said the game was tight between the two teams until the fifth inning when the team from Woodland broke away from Carbon for the win.

The team followed that game with another on Tuesday as they played against a team from Somerton, Ariz. Carbon again played a close game before falling to Somerton 7-3.

With the losses, the Carbon 12-year-olds were eliminated from tournament action thus completing their season.

The Cal Ripken 11-year-olds traveled to Beaver for their tournament play. In their first game, the Carbon boys lost to South Springs, Nev., in a closely contested game 9-8.

In their following game, they were matched up with a team from Taylorsville. The 11-year-olds fell in defeat to Taylorsville this time by a score of 16-2.

The 11-year-olds season is not over just yet. Henrie said the team was competing in a pool play tournament, which means they will continue playing again.

The Cal Ripken 8-year-olds traveled to Kearns to play in their tournament. In their first game against a team from Bluffdale, the team from Carbon were defeated 21-0.

As with the 11-year-old team, the 8-year-olds are competing in pool play and the loss should not affect their chances of advancing on.

Not all scores were made available by press time. Check back in Tuesday's edition of the Sun Advocate for updated scores from tournament action.
