A 27 year old Vernal man was killed and a fellow drilling rig worker from Grand Junction, Colo. was injured Thursday night in an ATV accident at Peter's Point on the Tavaputs Plateau in Carbon County.

The deceased victim has been identified as Dale Knight, 27, of Vernal.

The two men were employed by Patterson Drilling, working on the natural gas project in the isolated area, 60 miles from Wellington.

According to the Carbon County Sheriff's office, the two men were off-duty and riding in the back country near the man-camp where they stay during operations when the ATV apparently struck a rock and flipped. Neither man was wearing a safety helmet.

According to authorities the Vernal man was killed instantly while his companion had head injuries and was taken to Castleview Hospital for treatment.

Patterson Drilling is a contractor for the Bill Barrett Corporation and the men on the rigs work 12 hour shifts and then have 12 hours off to recreate and rest.
