Vernal man killed in ATV accident near Peters Point
A 27-year-old Vernal man was killed and a fellow drilling rig worker from Grand Junction, Colo. was injured Thursday night in an ATV accident at Peter's Point on the Tavaputs Plateau in Carbon County.
The two victims were employed by Peterson Drilling, working on the natural gas project in the isolated area, 60 miles from Wellington.
The deceased individual has been identified as Dale Knight, 27, of Vernal.
According to the Carbon County Sheriff's office, the two men were off-duty and riding in the back country near their employers man-camp, where they stay during operations, when the ATV apparently struck a rock and flipped. Official reports stipulate that neither man was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the accident.
According to authorities, Knight was killed instantly while his companion received head injuries and was taken to Castleview Hospital for treatment.
Patterson Drilling is a contractor for the Bill Barrett Corporation and the men on the rigs work 12 hour shifts and then have 12 hours off to recreate and rest. According to reports the two were off shift at the time of the incident.
