This past weekend, cancer survivors, family members affected by the disease and a community which comes together year after year, raised $47,000 - with more likely to come - in spite of a tough economy and uncooperative weather.

"We are all ecstatic with the amount we raised and the participation we saw," said local Relay for Life Chairperson Terri Lott. "We really had a great event."

The 2011 Carbon County Relay for Life was themed "Seasons of Hope," and from the event's opening ceremony on Friday night it was apparent that hope was alive and well in Utah's Castle Country. Several survivors, including soon to be Carbon High Senior Brooke Sherman, took the stage prior to the evening's first lap to let everyone in attendance know just how much their support and dedication can mean to those battling cancer.

As tears flowed freely within the crowd and the survivors gathered, the first lap commenced and relay 2011 was underway. Through the night, funds were raised, many laps were walked, luminaries were lit and the band played on as Carbon County came together to fight cancer for another year.

As the sun came up on Saturday morning, Lott announced that $47,085.83 had been raised with more donations to come. "We know for sure that $2,000 to $2,500 will be coming in, meaning we topped $50,000," explained Lott. "That amount of fund raising is something everyone involved with this event should be proud of."
