NAMI to hold swap meet this Saturday

It's around that time of the year when people start to clean out the closets, garages and storage units of unwanted items.

Local members of the Castle County chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness are gearing up to hold their first ever swap meet and community yard sale on Saturday at the Sutherlands parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is mainly serving as a fundraiser for the local NAMI group which will help fund training classes for the group, purchase materials and more. The non-profit group depends a lot upon the volunteer work of many group members to provide help to the community.

While the event may be taking place for the first time the reaction from the community has been well received, according to Stella Smith, board member with NAMI Castle County. Smith and other members came up with the idea for a swap meet after seeing it done in other towns and they decided to give it a shot.

NAMI has sold two parking spaces in the Sutherlands lot for $20 where people can set up booths to sell their items. People have expressed interest in selling crafts, art pieces and other types of items normally found at yard sales, Smith said.

A raffle will be held at the event with donated items from many local businesses. Tickets are being sold $1 per ticket or $5 for 6 tickets.

The group is planning on selling hot dogs and refreshments throughout the day as well. The money raised from selling space for booths and from the concessions will go towards helping fund the local Castle County NAMI group, according to Smith.
