The Helper American Legion baseball team opened its season with a pair of games this week.

They went to Tooele on Monday and lost 13-6. On Tuesday they played Granger 19 at home and this time posted a 5-4 win.

In Tooele, Derek Young got the start.

"He did a good job and he will continue to get better as the year goes," remarked Coach Jeff Cisneros about his young hurler. Young was just a sophomore this year.

Cisneros went on to add, "We made a few errors that hurt and we did not hit. We ended up with only three hits. A single by Hayden Basinger, a single by Jordan Blanc and a triple by Jaren McCourt was all the offensive we could manage.

"We are missing three probable starters for this whole week and it hurts us offensively more than anything.

"Some young guys are getting some opportunities and they will get better and help us out down the road. Hunter Huntington came in and saw some good time on the mound and pitched the final two innings and gave up only a couple runs. So overall a lost is never good but I think we will learn some good lessons and hopefully it will pay off for us."

Coach Cisneros was happy about the Tuesday night win, but sees room for improvement.

"Again we have a lot of young kids playing and I thought they did a better job last night. Jaren McCourt pitched the entire game and did a great job. I think we managed six hits last night so as you can see our offensive is still struggling. Julian Tamllos had two of those hits and we played better defensive but still had a couple errors."

Looking ahead towards the schedule in front of them, Cisneros said the team will get better by playing in more games.

"The rest of the week is going to be hard. I will be missing five guys for the rest of the week including the trip to Idaho. The positive thing is guys are going to get some valuable time this week and hopefully it will build some confidence. We play at Kearns tonight and then we will be off to Idaho for the rest of the week."
