Dinos soccer picks up big win over ALA
A season full of many ties and a lot of region losses came down to one big game for the Carbon Dino soccer team. A week ago Carbon was schooled by Wasatch 12-1. Then they lost to Union 4-0 last Friday before taking their fist region win in more than a season. The Dinos downed American Leadership Academy 5-4 to earn a trip to post-season play.
The last time ALA and Carbon met, the contest ended in a double overtime draw. Whoever won this game would get a berth in the play-offs and the other would live in the Region 10 cellar.
ALA scored the first two goals using the favorable slope and the wind to their advantage. The Dinos put one in before the half was up. They quickly tied it up in the first minutes of the second half. Jorge Mendiola led the charge and he was able to score a hat trick plus one in the winning effort. Milton Sawamara added the other goal. Sawamara and Mendiola also had an assist. Tanner Gagnon fed his scorers three assists as well.
The last time Carbon was able to take part in the playoffs was when it was an automatic berth due playing in a small region. This time they had to earn it.
"This was a big win. We completely dominated them. Some of their goals were weak, but ours were all earned and we had assists on all of them. Many of our kids have not had any playoff experience, but this game was like a playoff game," said coach Keith Palmer after the game. "This is big for our program because it gives us an extra game and an extra week of practice. It will help our program a lot for the future."
The Dinos have one last regular season game with Park City next Wednesday over at Park City. It is looking like the play-off game will be against Delta. Delta is the number one seed in region 12. Palmer feels like this is the best top team they could face in the playoffs and is optimistic that Carbon will have a good game as they face Delta. That game will be May 5 in Delta.
