Grebe gets second chance

Print PageEmail PageShareGet Reprints

A recent patient at Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation, this adult Eared Grebe was found near Huntington on the ground.  This family of birds migrates at night and need water to land on as they are completely helpless on land.  They occasionally land on the ground during storms or when the moon is bright and the roads are wet, looking like a body of water.  They can become injured in the landing, but usually they have no injuries, only requiring a quick examination and then putting them on a large body of water, which is exactly what happened to this little one.

Migration for many species is taking place now, so be looking for species you may not see too often.
