Easy win, tough loss define week a Lady Dinos softball team

Every coach and every team would like to post a win each time they took the field, but sometimes just holding your own against a very tough opponent is a small victory in itself. The Lady Dinos softball team put a hurt on the Emery Spartans with an 11-1 five inning win on Wednesday. Then, the third ranked Union Cougars just barely squeaked out a 3-2 win over Carbon on Friday.
On Wednesday Kenzie Cave pitched a one run game against the Spartans. The defense behind her made her work easier as they made the plays and did not commit any errors. The Spartans struggled with four errors in the game.
The Carbon offense was sharp with Breanna Hurdsman and Shaylie Jones smacking triples. Cave added a two run homer to seal up the five inning win.
"It was a total team effort. Shaylie Jones is really shaping up as a good catcher. We didn't know who would fill that spot at the beginning of the season and to say her effort is remarkable would be an understatement," said Coach Tony Pinedo after the win. "Now we have to face a very good Union pitcher on Friday."
Very good is putting things mildly. Union's pitcher had a rising fastball that was difficult for the Dinos to catch up to. But Carbon also had some weapons. For three innings it was a stale mate, before Carbon broke the ice in the fourth. Darrien Smith struck out, but the catcher was unable to handle the pitch and Smith ran to first. The throw from Union went out into right field and Smith advanced to third on errors. Alexis Oliver drove her in.
Union was able to connect on a pitch from Cave and tie it up on a homer in the fifth. A two run shot in the sixth put the Cougars up. But Carbon fought back in the bottom of the seventh and scored a run on a two bagger from Alexus Wilson.
It was a tough loss for the Lady Dinos and there were tears as they left the field. But Coach Tony Pinedo was not displeased with the team's efforts. He gave credit to the Union hurler and was pleased his team's defense again played tough.
Carbon only has one game next week and that is Tuesday at home with Park City at 3:30. The Lady Dinos are currently sitting in third place in region 10 at 1-2. Union (4-0) and Wasatch (2-1) are in first and second respectively.
