Lady Dinos Softball opens season with win over Emery
Carbon softball opened its season against Emery in Castledale on Friday and came away with the 10-9 win over their neighboring county's rival in a non-region preseason game.
After the weekend Moab tournament was over the Carbon team is sitting with a 4-1 record.
The Spartans were on top 4-0 by the second inning as the Lady Dinos were not able to get their offense rolling. With neither team putting anything on the board in the third, the Dinos exploded for seven in the fourth. Emery came right back and took the lead with four of their own in the bottom of the frame.
"n the sixth Carbon again strung together enough offense to push three across. This time they only allowed the Spartans one run and Carbon held on to the lead. With each team adding a goose egg in the seventh frame, it was Carbon that walked away with their first win of the season.
Carbon scored 10 runs off of nine hits. Only one of those was for extra bags on a double by Kenzie Cave. She was also the Dino pitcher of record for the game.
Over the weekend the team headed to Moab and took three of their four games. They finished the tournament in second place, losing only to host Moab.
Grand is the defending 2A softball team with many returning starters, including their pitcher.
Carbon Coach Tony Pinedo is very happy with the way his team is playing. Against Emery he felt they played a little sloppy, but showed heart in the fact they came from behind twice to take the win. "n Moab he felt the play was much more solid and that contributed to their great success.
The team will head out to play a single game against Pineview in Utah's Dixie on Thursday and then move on to the Snow Canyon Classic Tournament that is being held in St George over the weekend.
They will then open tournament play with games against Syracuse and Manti on Friday.
