EU Baseball opens conference play
While most people were still deep into the basketball season, The EU Eagle baseball team was already slugging through preseason action. They have played 14 games including four conference games and sit at 4-10 on the season.
EU opened play on Feb. 3 down in Arizona with a 3-2 win over Paradise CC and then dropped the second game of the double header 8-5. They went on to beat Central CC 14-13 the following day and then took a one run, 3-2 defeat at the hands of Gateway CC the same day.
To wrap up the Arizona swing they faced Central again on Feb 6 and couldn't find any offense as they lost 8-1 and 11-1. Two days later in Scottsdale they dropped another pair 8-4 and 6-0.
Coach Scott Madsen was very happy despite the losses as his team had come out and played better than expected with very little outside practice against teams who could take the field almost every day of the year. Central is ranked number 4 in the nation and his team posted a big win over them in the bottom of the 11th. That marathon win took a bit of the snap out of the team due to lack of game conditioning in the early season play.
Snow College came to town to take on the Eagles on Feb. 18-19, but snow on the field prevented the team from getting all four games in. EU was the victor in both of the two games they were able to play. The beat the Badgers 10-0 and 8-0 for their first shutouts of the season.
Last weekend they opened conference action with a pair of double headers against Southern Idaho. They dropped all four games without producing much offense in the series. They lost 9-1 and 14-1 on Friday and then went down 9-2 and 8-1 on Saturday. Box scores and stats were unavailable.
Conference action continues this weekend with a home stand against Western Nevada. All conference games are a four game series with double headers on Friday and Saturday. The Friday games begin at 1 p.m. and the Saturday set starts at noon. Games are played on the CEU field in the North Price baseball complex off of 800 North.
