Letters to the editor: Are Americans Mesmerized?

After hearing the State of the Union Address by our current President, I am confident we will see President Obama growing a beard. How can a man lie to the American people and still be able to look at himself in a mirror in order to shave, thus the beard! This is based on the assumption that he clearly stated his goals are to help industry and create jobs.

In the last two years through his Secretary of Interior, Ken Salazar, the president has successfully eliminated over 250,000 jobs in. the oil and gas industry in the West. This is a result of the BLM's position on new leasing and the deliberate effort to impecic-, the drilling of new wells on existing leases.

When we add the 500,000 plus jobs lost to U.S. citizens by the moratorium of U.S. companies drilling in the Gulf and the south eastern coast of the U.S., the number of lost employment is between, three quarters of a million and one million high paying jobs. It is interesting to note that foreign companies can and will continue to drill in this same general area depleting oil and gas reserves that our country could use to offset our dependence on foreign oil.

This Administration has totally thrown out the basic principle of our country; that being a nation founded on law. Oil and gas companies spend up to several years doing environmental studies to comply with government regulations (NRPA) in order to gain approval for one well..

In the last two years the Department of Interior has approved over 150,000 category exclusions "CX" on renewable energy projects. This is saying NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) does not apply to renewable energy. It is absurd to think that acres of solar panels, windmill farms, etc. have no environmental impacts. This Administration would rather lie to Americans than admit they are above the law.

The Obama Administration. has totally disregarded the laws that have governed this nation to such a degree that the Water Gate scandal looks like a Boy Scout prank in comparison. Yet where is the public outcry? Have we become a nation of sheep or is the media been bought and paid for by our standing government?

A very intelligent friend of mine who works in Washington D.C. told me that President Obama would give the conservative states in the West to the Russians if he felt he could pick up a vote on either coast; and to be honest, considering what this administration is doing relative to the management of public lands, we may be better off.

I am not a conspiracy advocate yet. When you. follow the actions of this president it would appear that his goal is to cripple America's oil and gas industry to such a degree that we will be totally at the mercy of foreign countries for our petroleum products, resulting in gas and diesel fuel costing over $5 a gallon. This may bankrupt our nation, but it will make alternative renewable energy more economical. Unfortunately, the end result win hurt the poorest segment of our population. For example, an electric/gas auto currently costs over $10,000 more than a conventional gas auto.

People living in big cities with mass transit may benefit. But most Westerner's live in rural areas or small towns. An automobile or truck is not a luxury but a necessity. A lot of us require a 4 wheel drive just to get home some nights.

This Administration provides a lot of rhetoric with little, if any, substance and what little they have accomplished has been detrimental to the majority of working Americans. I am 65 years old and have owned and operated a business most of my adult life.

I am not a right wing conservative. I have never been a member of either party. I vote for the person and their platform.. My voting record as an Independent would likely be split between the Republicans and Democrats. I feel strongly about the environment and have worked my entire life to insure we leave the land in better condition after the resource has been removed than it was prior to plan's intervention.

Are Americans so mesmerized by the rhetoric that they are deaf and blind to the reality of this Administration?
