Dinos claw their way past Park City for win
What a difference a week can make.
Last week the Dinos suffered two big losses. This week they put up two important wins. They knew they had to pull it together and beat ALA and they did. Park City was going to prove much more challenging, but Carbon found something deep inside and rallied for a 64-59 victory in their final home game of the season.
The Dinos found themselves in familial territory at the end of the first quarter of play. They were in a nine point hole. But that would be the last quarter that Park City outscored Carbon in the game.
All through the second quarter the Dinos would make a run at the Miners, but couldn't catch up. They headed to the locker room just down by seven.
The third quarter was much of the same, but the deficit was narrowing with each Dino surge. At the end of the third period Carbon was within striking distance with only a four point spread.
With the Dino defense ratcheted up a notch, the offense began its final assault. With 2:06 left on the clock, Carbon took the lead for the first time in the contest on a pair of free throws and never let it go.
The final minute of play was not without its drama as Carbon committed a couple of fouls that stopped the clock. Luckily the Miners did not convert every one and the Dinos hit theirs down the stretch to ice up the game.
The hot hand for the Dinos again belonged to Clint Finkbiner with 23 points. Colin Moynier had a great game on the boards and put in 11 points. Gage Bigelow added 10 to help the cause.
For Coach Ted Bianco, it was the performance he knew his team had in them."We got ourselves in a big hole, but worked our way out of it. We just kept battling. Our defense was the key to this game. We played our best defense so far. It was a total team effort and I am proud of them," he said.
He added,"We just need to keep this momentum going now into the playoffs."
Down on the floor the emotion was high for the seniors who played their final game at home.
Sophomore Dakota Cisneros was able to express what the whole team was feeling.
"This was a great win for our seniors and especially for the Finkbiner brothers who lost their father. I have enjoyed playing with all of the seniors and they have taught me a lot. I am happy we won this last game at home for them," he said.
The Dinos will have one more region game as they play Wasatch on Friday night. Carbon will then have to travel to region 12 for a play-in game.
It is looking like they will face North Sanpete who is tops in region 12. Carbon will finish fourth in region 10.
