Despite injuries, grades and illnesses, Dino wrestlers place fourth
The Carbon wrestling team placed fourth at the Northern 3-A Division Tournament last weekend.
Each team is allowed to enter two wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes, but due to injury, illness, and grades, the Carbon team was made up of only 12 wrestlers. All 12 qualified to enter the 3-A State Tournament next weekend at the UVU center.
Carbon's team won five of six first round matches. In the second round they won nine of 11 matches.
Only Kade Scott at 103 pounds and Colton Sanderson at 112 pounds lost in that round. On Saturday morning the team lost seven of the nine first round championship matches.
Only Bryce Jackman and Wyatt Martinez advanced into the finals.
In the medal rounds the team redeemed itself by winning 10 of 12 matches resulting in the individual places listed above.
David Fonnesbeck entered the tournament as the number one seed, but he had to forfeit matches due to a shoulder injury. That cost valuable team points which would likely have moved Carbon's team to third place. Morgan was only 13 points ahead of Carbon in the end.
Coach John Watkins added some information.
"Interesting team statistics are that Carbon wrestlers were third overall in the number of pins, at 28 behind Bear River at 36 and Wasatch at 40. Individually, Cody Hunt scored the most pins in the least aggregate time (4 pins in 5:53) for the whole tournament, and seven of Carbon's wrestlers were among the top 10 scoring the most pins in the least aggregate time."
He went on to say, "The coaching team of myself, Lou Mele, Montel Jackman, and Paul Neese are very pleased with the results of the wrestlers as we plan for fine-tuning techniques and conditioning as we head into the 3-A State tournament on February 11 and 12 at UVU."
