Last year, Rep. Christine Watkins (D-Price) and Sen. David Hinkins (R-Emery), got their colleagues at the Utah Legislature to declare October, 2010 as "Italian-American Heritage Month" across the state.

This year, Watkins has filed a bill to have the month set aside permanently. HB 44, which had no senate sponsor listed as of Wednesday, would amend the section of Utah law dealing with permanent commemorations to reserve October to honor the contributions Italians have made to the state and nation.

The bill has already been reviewed by the legislative fiscal analyst, who has noted that it won't cost anything to surround Columbus Day with 30 other days in recognition of those whose achievements in arts, science and medicine have changed the world.
