It was a classic tale of two halves for the Carbon High Dinos basketball team.

The Dinos played a strong first half, making shots and playing well as a team. But the second half proved to be the difference maker as the Emery High Spartans played more aggressively and Dinos committed too many mistakes, leading to the Spartans securing an 81-67 win in Castle Dale on Saturday night.

Dinos head coach Ted Bianco said the team played a strong first half, getting calls from the officiating and making their open shots. The Dinos started the game off strong by jumping out to a nine point lead after the first quarter to lead 26-17. The Spartans started to cut the lead down and at halftime as the Dinos led 48-44.

"We played a really aggressive first half of basketball," said Bianco. "But it wasn't the same in the second half and we didn't move in the direction we wanted to."

Bianco felt that the Spartans began to play a more aggressive style in the second half, taking the Dinos out of their rhythm. The Dinos began to accumulate turnovers and started to miss the easy shots which they were hitting in the first half.

"We had a funk in the second half with the turnovers and missed shots," said Bianco. "Our focus was not as good as it was in the first half and it basically cost us the game."

The Spartans aggressive play showed up on the scoreboard as they took control of the game, taking the lead as the third quarter ended with Emery leading 63-58. That trend continued as the Spartans took control of the game in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Dinos 18-9, leading to a 81-67 victory.

Gage Bigelow led the Dinos with 16 points as Clint Finkbiner (15), Colin Moynier (13) and Tanner Gagnon (12) all scored in double digits. Kash Jewkes led the Spartans with 24 points, Ty Benson had 19 and Quinn Montgomery and Kashe Potter both finished with 15 each.

The Dinos need to improve their defense going into region play, Bianco said, noting that the Dinos allowed 81 points and were outscored 37-19 in the second half.

"The team knows they will need to step up and be ready to challenge their opponents every night," said Bianco.

The Dinos open region play against Union tonight at 5:15 p.m.
