Despite blowing out the Emery Spartans in their first match-up of the season, the Lady Dinos knew going into the Tuesday night match-up that this time it would be a battle. The game lived up to that prediction, but in the end Carbon prevailed with a 58-53 win over Emery.

The Lady Dinos last game was way back on December 18. They were a bit rusty as they stepped on the court, but it didn't take senior Tia Pappas long to find her stroke. But the Spartans were looking for revenge and redemption from the earlier loss and pushed hard. The game was close for the entire first half. Mariah Pollock hit a pair of free throws at the end of the second quarter to send the Dinos to the locker room with a slim 28-26 lead.

Emery came out and took lead early in the third, but neither team was willing to concede. It was a tough physical battle. With 2:40 left to play it looked like the Dinos would cruise to a victory. But the Spartans battled back in as the Dinos committed a couple of untimely fouls and failed to score on their end. Emery had to resort to fouling to stop the clock and Pappas was sent to the line several times and hit the clutch free throws the Dinos needed to ice up the game.

Pappas finished the game with a career high of 29 points. She was 12 of 15 from the line and had five assists and four steals. Sara Potts pulled in eight boards and Kristen Jewkes managed five steals. Miranda Averett added eight points.

Coach Cami Carlson was relieved but not surprised by the outcome. "We knew going in that Emery was going to step it up after the last game. They showed up ready to play. We were a little rusty but the girls played hard," she said.

Carlson added,"This game showed us some things to work on. We committed stupid fouls, were rotating incorrectly on defense and out of position at times. We need to get better on rebounding, especially against teams like Emery that have a couple of big girls. I could see we were not boxing out and we were giving them second chances. Emery's record does not reflect how good of a team they really are and I think they will end up one of the top teams this year."

The Carbon girls will play a make up game from over the holiday season this Friday night with game time at 7:00 p.m.
