Lady Eagles end December with road trip to Arizona
Head Coach Dave Paur takes his team down to the warm weather of Arizona each December to keep sharp for the upcoming conference schedule. This year they got to start off with two very tough teams and losses before bouncing back with a solid win to wrap things up.
On Dec. 28, EU took on Central Arizona and lost 72-39. The next day they faced Pima Community College and dropped that game 66-49. Finally EU took on win-less Chandler-Gilbert and kept them that way. It was EU 70-49 over CG.
Central Arizona went 35-0 last season and won their 4th National Division I Basketball Tournament title and placed second 2007 & 2008 and third the year before that in 2006.EU got down early in the game against a good team and never recovered.
Despite the loss the Brazilian trio still give it their all as Bruna Deichmann lead the team in scoring with 13 points followed by Priscila Santos with 11 points. Inside player Daiana Ferreria grabbed 10 rebounds.
The next day EU had another tough match up as they took on the host school of the tournament Pima Community College. This is the second time the two schools have met this year. On Nov. 6 Pima outlasted EU by six points in Cedar City on a neutral court. Deichmann repeated her previous performance against the Aztecs scoring 15 points. Santos recorded a double/double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Team shooting from the field for the game was just 27 percent and free throws (15/32) especially in the second half (8/20) didn't give the team any chance for a win.
Finally the Eagles had an easier game as they met up with Chandler-Gilbert. It was just what the EU team needed to go leave the Pima Tournament with positive results and a win. Deichmann scored 27 points in 27 minutes of play. Ferreria pulled down 14 boards and had eight blocked shots. Santos scored 12 points.
The team perhaps sets a new offensive rebound record with 32 and almost as many total rebounds as points; 61 team rebounds to 70 points. The three above mentioned players grabbing 19 of those 32 offensive rebounds. Christin Figgins dished out 5 assists while scoring 9 points.
The team will host Snow on Friday night at 5:30 and Salt Lake Community College Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for a series of conference games.
