The Pinnacle girls basketball team have opened their season on the road and it has been tough. They finally got to play a home game on New Year's eve, but Tabiona did not respect that fact and beat the Panthers 62-41.

Nerves were present as the Pinnacle girls took the floor. Tabiona scored quickly as PCA had trouble penetrating. But the Panther defense stepped it up and soon the buckets began to drop. At the end on the first period it was 13-11 in favor of the Tigers.

In the second PCA took the lead and was beginning put a little fear into the Tigers. But late in the half a Tabiona player went down hard on an inadvertent move by PCA. The game was stopped for a time to assist the player and clean up blood off the floor. The Panthers came out on the floor much more tentative and lost the momentum they had built. By the end of the half they were down by eight. In the final half of play Tabiona pulled away and Pinnacle never found their stride again.

While the Panthers struggled a bit from the floor, they were solid at the line, hitting 79 percent from the charity stripe. Pinnacle also was in foul trouble early. Haley Spigarelli fouled out in the 4th quarter with a pair of rebounds and five points. Leading the team was Monique Hullings with 12 points, Laura Torrendell helped with nine and Rylie Birch added six. Rylie Birch led on the boards with seven.

"In the first half we played pretty tough," said coach Heidi Kay. "It was our first home game and I think it makes the girls nervous to play in front of family and friends. But I saw good strength from them in both rebounds and free throws."

The Panthers return to the road with a Saturday game against Whitehorse. This is the beginning of conference action.
