Driving classes offered at senior center
The next Driver Safety Class sponsored by the Carbon County Senior Center and AARP is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011. The 4-hour class will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 5 p.m.
The course is designed especially for individuals 50 years of age or older. There have been numerous studies and articles written in newspapers, magazines and television programs recently that present information on aging and the effects pertaining to driving. Most of the information that has been discussed in these articles will be addressed in this class. Changes in vision, hearing and reaction time will be presented so that the older driver is made aware of these events and ways to compensate for them while driving.
Also, new traffic laws that have been enacted will be part of the classroom presentation.
Information on winter driving techniques, defensive driving, right and left turns, right-of-way laws, aggressive drivers and ways to assess your own and other's driving ability is included. There are no tests given but there are some short in-class quizzes that will make the class useful and enjoyable for the participants.
Persons contemplating taking this class may want to check with their individual insurance company to see about discounts that are available upon completion. By way of reminder, in order to maintain the insurance discount the course must be taken every three years.
