Good road swing for Dino basketball
The Carbon High Dino opened their season with their traditional trip to the Warrior Classic Tournament in Fruita ,Colo. They ended up 2-1 over the long weekend with a 65-54 victory over Palisade, a 56-39 loss to Fruita Monument and an exciting 84-79 overtime win over Central Colorado.
"We were the smallest team at the tournament," said Coach Ted Bianco. "But we learned we can play with the larger schools. We played as a team and our defensive effort was fantastic in the final win. We learned in our loss to Fruita what happens when we don't play good defense. That is what cost us that game."
Bianco finished, "we battled back after being down 16 points in a bad second quarter to beat a very tough team on their home court. Even though Clint Finkbiner had some really good games, he did so because we played as a team and made it happen. Its what we will have to do to be successful this season."
Finkbiner was the top scorer for the Dinos in the tournament. Against Palisade he had 14 points. Finkbiner and Julian Tamllos each added 11. Tanner Gagnon pulled in six boards and had four steals. Dakota Cisneros added eight points, four assists and four steals.
In the loss to Fruita Monument Finkbiner and Gagnon each scored eight points. Colin Moynier grabbed 10 rebounds.
In the OT win against Central, Finkbiner had his best game yet with 35 points. He hit seven shots from beyond the arc. Gagnon followed with 15 points, eight boards and four steals. Moynier just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The team will have battled the Spartans on Wednesday night at Carbon High. Scores will be posted later. The team will be back on the road to take on Bear River on Saturday Dec. 11.
