Helper finds and fixes aromatic problem at Rio

The Rio Theatre in Helper is now scent-free. It took some detective work and a little demolition, but the mystery source of the persistent sewer odor in the basement has been found and fixed.

The city had been looking for a gas or liquid leak or some other source without success. Then the public works people decided to inject smoke into the sewer line and watch to see where it came out. They discovered the source when smoke filaments started seeping from behind a wall downstairs.

Once the wall was removed, the problem turned out to be a faulty vent pipe that was allowing the noxious odors to come up from the sewer.
