Dino Cross Country team gets great results at region meet in Park City
On Oct. 13, the Carbon Cross Country team headed to the Region 10 meet in Park City. The Dinos made a very strong showing with the girls taking second place and the boys grabbing third.
Park City's home course has the first two miles of steady uphill and the last mile rolling up and down. For the Lady Dinos, Regan Powell had the best race of the season and her career. She placed fourth overall and was the only one that broke up Park City's dominant top seven. She stopped them from a perfect score. She ran a time of 19:35, a new personal best for 5,000 meters. Powell was also was named to the All Region Squad. Rachel Goodrich also ran a personal best in a time of 20:44 finishing 9th overall. Both girls beat their previous times on this course by over a minute.
"Park city was stunned to say the least that we were in there top seven," said Coach Telisse Allen.
Diana Olsen finished 12th overall and a new season best of 21:54. Kristen Jewkes had a strong second half of the race and finished in 15th in a time of 22:23. Karissa Nelson was 19th in a time of 23:28. This put all five Lady Dinos in the top 20.
"They finished second to Park city and beat Wasatch by five points. For not having a complete girls team nearly all season we surprised both Park city and Wasatch with our performance. That race moved Regan (Powell)and Rachel (Goodrich) into a top 20 ranking at state," Coach Allen added.
The Carbon boys finished a strong third. The boys shuffled the line up a bit this race. Austin Pullan crossed the finish first for Carbon in a overall place of 8th in a time of 17:19. Pullman received All Region honors.
Garrett Marsing was 11th in a time of 17:30, Justin Hepworth was 16th in a time of 17:47, Cody Hunt was 22nd in a time of 18:20, Kaleb Kulow was the fifth and final Carbon runner to cross the line and add to the team score. He ended in 24th with a time of 18:36.
Coach Allen added, "We were not far off Wasatch in points. We plan to get them at State when the numbers are on our side. Honorable mention for me was Brenden Hepworth who finished eighth for the Carbon team and shattered his career best by over two minutes in a time of 19:51."
Both the Dino boy's and girl's teams will continue onto the state meet on Oct. 22 at Sugarhouse Park.
