Ruby Cordova, who was seeking re-election to the Carbon School Board after four years of service, has been disqualified from the race. She missed the August 31 deadline for filing required campaign financial disclosure reports with the state.

Her name will not appear on the Nov. 2 ballot and write-in votes will not be counted.

"I blew it," she said in an interview Thursday. "But the law is the law. If we don't support the law, how can we expect our students to support the laws the board makes for them?"

As a result of the disqualification, Lee McCourt of Wellington will be the only candidate appearing for the Wellington-East Carbon seat on the school board. "I'm sure she'll do a great job," Cordova said of her former opponent.

Cordova said, "I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my district. I got new insights into how I look at the school board and what it does."

During her four year tenure, she served on the State School Board Legislative Committee. She also became involved in the national Hispanic school group at the national level.
