Tuesday night the Lady Dinos volleyball team traveled to Union for a crucial match. To keep pace with Wasatch they had to post a win.

That is exactly what they did with a three set sweep of the Cougars. Carbon took the match 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23 to stay tied at the top of region 10 with the Wasps. Next Tuesday those two teams will face off in Price for the region prize and top seeding in the state playoffs.

"Union High School sits in third place in the region and just the day before their head coach called it quits. They had nothing to lose and before a packed small gymnasium with a new interim head coach they had upset on their minds," said Coach Bob Potts.

In the first set, Carbon jumped out to a 3-0 lead and maintained a slight lead throughout. Blocking was a key to the win as the Dinos recorded one solo and eight block assists. They also recorded nine kills that were spread evenly across four different players.

The second set had Carbon playing catch up to the Cougars early. The Dinos grabbed brief lead only to have Union take it back and keep the lead at 22-21. Coach Potts called a Carbon timeout and a challenged the team to refocus and finish strong.

The Dinos did just that as they forced a side out to tie the game. Senior setter, Alexis Oliver stepped up to serve and delivered as Carbon scored the next three points and walked away with the win.

Junior middle hitter Amanda Freestone pounded down five kills in the set. Senior libero Kacylia Ivory collected her 10th dig of the match.

In set three Carbon passed well off of the opponents serves but couldn't quite keep distance between themselves and Union. The score was 24-23 in favor of the Dinos with the Cougars serving to try to tie the score. Senior outside hitter Sara Potts cranked a hard kill down, securing the win for the Dinos.

Freestone finished the night with 13 kills along with two service aces and three solo blocks. Potts added 10 kills and 21 defensive digs. Ivory scooped out 14 digs on the night as well.

The team will continue to keep themselves sharp as they travel to play in the Sevier Valley Tournament this weekend. Their first opponent there will be the ever tough Juan Diego Soaring Eagles. Tuesday will be the final region game as the Dinos take on Wasatch for the region title.
