Stan the Drum Man returning to Carbon
Last year, Stan the Drum Man (Stan Secrest) helped over 65 Helper Junior High School students make beautiful handmade wood drums with real goatskin drumheads. The workshop was made possible by the Utah Department of Arts and Museums.
It was such a success that Helper Junior High will be hosting Stan the Drum Man once more during the week of November 15-19 with a grant from the Utah Department of Arts and Museums.
After the workshop, students, teachers and community members participated in a well-loved and memorable drum circle in the Helper Junior High School gymnasium.
Stan is a visiting artist from upstate New York. Last year, students and teachers loved the beautiful drums Stan helped them build. Both students and teachers report that they have continued practicing and playing on their handmade drums, which are so durable that with normal care, they can last a lifetime. This year, the grant was only partially funded so teachers will not be able to build a drum from grant funds.
However, Stan is offering a community drum building workshop on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone can enroll in this workshop, which will be held November 19-21. Go to www.stanthedrumman.com and click on the Price/Helper link.
