The CEU volleyball squad opened up their preseason action with a trip to Twin Falls, Idaho for a two day tournament Aug. 27-28. They were 1-4 in tournament play, but played some top ranked teams in the process. CEU is not ranked, but each team they met in the tournament was in the top 25.

Opening against CSI, who is the top NCJAA team in the nation, CEU lost 25-23, 25-18 and 25-13. They then faced Miami Dade, ranked number four, losing 25-17, 25-11 and 25-16. The following day they had to face third ranked Salt Lake CC and lost 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23. Finally they got a break and faced the 25th ranked Northwestern Wyoming, beating them in five sets by the scores of 30-28, 10-25, 27-25, 21-25 and 15-12.

"We played some tough teams and we played good and we played bad," said Coach Grant Barraclough. "We got better as the weekend went along and I saw our best play in the final match. We definitely have some things to work on. If we keep improving we will have a good season."

For the tournament Miranda Parkinson led the team with 51 kills, Barbra Jardin smashed 35 and Sabrina Simas had 30. Parkinson also had 51 digs and Julia Potts ended with 39. Potts led the team with 10 solo blocks and Jardin was a part of 21 block assists.

The team now heads to Scottsdale, Ariz. for a tournament Sept. 10-11.
